چکیده

A new automatic method for discontinuity traces mapping and sampling on a rock mass digital model is described in this work. The implemented procedure allows one to automatically identify discontinuity traces on a Digital Surface Model: traces are detected directly as surface breaklines, by means of maximum and minimum principal curvature values of the vertices that constitute the model surface. Color influence and user errors, that usually characterize the trace mapping on images, are eliminated. Also trace sampling procedures based on circular windows and circular scanlines have been implemented: they are used to infer trace data and to calculate values of mean trace length, expected discontinuity diameter and intensity of rock discontinuities. The method is tested on a case study: results obtained applying the automatic procedure on the DSM of a rock face are compared to those obtained performing a manual sampling on the orthophotograph of the same rock face. & 2012 Elsevier Ltd. LiDAR and optical imaging for 3-D fracture orientations

Data on discontinuities are always necessary for design, characterization and analysis of rock structures. The time honored method of manual measurements with Brunton compass is both time consuming and often inconvenient given issues such as restricted access to measurement areas, introduction of erroneous data due to sampling difficulties and human bias, considerable safety risks since measure...

Automatic Rock Mass Discontinuities Detection Based on Binocular 3-D Reconstruction

Measurement of rock mass discontinuities was the key for rock mass 3D network simulation, seepage analysis, and stability analysis. In this paper, a non-contact rock mass discontinuities detection method based on the single camera binocular three-dimensional reconstruction theory was presented. This method provided an effective way for grouping rock mass discontinuities and calculation the disc...

Automated identification and characterisation of discontinuity sets in outcropping rock masses using 3D terrestrial laser scan survey techniques

It is generally accepted that the identification and characterisation of discontinuities in discontinuous rock masses is one of the most important aspects in rock mass modelling. Traditional manual field survey methods for gathering discontinuity properties are biased, hazardous, difficult and time-consuming. This paper describes a computer approach, based on terrestrial laser scan data, which ...
